Royal Meath: County of Kings: Page 3Meath's only outlet to the sea is a seven mile strip of coast where the twin seaside resorts of Bettystown and Laytown are located. Laytown is famed for horseracing, while Bettystown is where the famous eighth century Tara Brooch was found in 1850. Navan (An Uaimh) lies at the confluence of the Boyne and Blackwater rivers (not to be confused with the Munster Blackwater.) The town was walled and fortified by de Lacy and granted charters by a succession of English kings down through the seventeenth century when it began to decline. The Act of Union in 1801 dissolved the corporation. Its most interesting sight today is the fifteenth century Athlumney Castle which was set ablaze by its owner, Sir Lancelot Dowdall, rather than have it fall into the hands of William of Orange.
